At Dayspring Farm we raise Katahdin sheep in the most natural way possible on our green southern Vermont pastures – without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. A mixture of grasses, legumes and forbs combined with regular pasture rotations keep our sheep growing or producing milk for quality fat lambs.
Katahdin sheep are non-wool producing, self-shedding animals (hair sheep) that don’t require shearing. Katahdin sheep were originally developed in Maine as hardy, low maintenance animals resistant to parasites. Katahdin hair sheep provide a practical option for those interested in raising a meat animal with great lamb vigor and mothering ability, and who do not want to shear.* The adaptable genetic makeup of the Katahdin allow them to produce a superior lamb crop on pasture and supplemental natural grains.
Katahdin lamb meat contains only 60% of the cholesterol found in the low cholesterol meat from turkeys and is easily digestible. The tasty meat also has a very mild flavor because Katahdin are hair sheep with a minimum of the lanolin found in the wool-producing breeds.
What do we sell?
We raise and sell Katahdin breeding stock and fat lambs for the table. Lambs can be purchased at any stage of development, live, by the carcass or the form of packaged frozen lamb meat ready for the grill or oven. For meat lamb see our lamb meat page for details. For breeding stock go to our breeding stock page.
